According to Webster’s, a democracy is defined as “a : government by the people; esp : rule of the majority.” Basically it’s a place where everyone has an equal say in everything, from elections to legislation, to any other conceivable decision that a government would have to make. You maybe wondering to yourself right now “if the United States is a democracy, why don’t I get to have some say in the government decision making process? How come I wasn’t asked for my opinion on President Bush’s Medicare drug plan?” Well the answer is simple. WE DON’T LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY!Shocked? Well here’s why. The Democrats (notice the similarity in the root of both “Democrat” and “Democracy”) for years have been trying to convince Americans that we live in a Democracy where we should do what is best for the majority of people, whether it is right or wrong (such as taxing the hell out of the wealthy, while maintaining low tax rates for the poor).
According to Webster’s definition above, here is a simplified example of a democracy: there are five people in this democracy four men and one woman. Three of the men are sex addicts who see nothing wrong with raping a woman if it is legal. One of the members of this democracy has proposed that the group vote on whether rape should be legal among the five people in this democracy. The three sex addicts obviously vote for legalizing rape, and the other man and the woman vote against it. Unfortunately, the vote of 3:2 wins, regardless of the fact that rape is wrong, and the woman winds up with no way to prevent getting raped by the three sex addicts according to the law. Hopefully this example shows the problem with democracies – they almost always oppress the minority in the group (in this case the anti-rape people) and usually leads to a dictatorship where the majority opinion rules.
Again, I know this was an extreme example, but nonetheless according to the definition of democracy, this was a rule of the majority. Some might say “well most people are good decent people, and would probably vote the moral way in this situation anyways”, to which I would respond that most people would not vote for something just because it is the moral and right thing to do. Most people vote for something just because it will further their own self interest without any consideration of the effects on not only other people, but the future of the country.
Now you’re probably wondering, “if the U.S. isn’t a democracy, then what is it?” According to Joseph Farah in his book Taking America Back “America was created as a representative constitutional republic-one with checks and balances built in, with a Constitution, with a federal government of limited power and scope, a system in which the individual’s inalienable rights were recognized and protected, a representative form of government, not one based on direct vote of the populace. And thank God for that.”
The representative constitutional republic with checks and balances is designed to keep the extremes, such as my rape example, from ever occurring in America. Yet the demoncrats (no that isn’t a typo) keep feeding Americans the idea that what is good for the majority is good for everybody.
