People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have launched a campaign against Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) claiming that they use cruel and inhumane methods in the breeding, living arrangements and ultimately slaughtering of the chickens they sell. PETA will be distributing “Bloody Buckets” that resemble the red and white buckets KFC serves it’s chicken in. Inside the “Bloody Buckets” are fake bones, blood and feathers, a plastic chicken with it’s throat cut and a devious looking Col. Sanders figure holding a knife to a terrified chicken. To top it all off these buckets will be handed out to children who frequent the restaurants nationwide, as well as to children who attend schools near KFC restaurants.
Let’s see where these people have their priorities. They claim that KFC’s suppliers are cruel when handling their chickens, by starving them to death, and forcing them to live in cramped cages, among other things. Then, they fill buckets with items that even I would find to be pretty disgusting, and hand them to little children. They are so concerned with the welfare of the chickens, that they forget about the cruel way they convey their message to children.
This isn’t the first time that PETA has attacked fast food restaurants either. They attacked McDonalds in an 11 month campaign with “Unhappy Meals”, Burger King over six months and Wendy’s over two months in similar campaigns. Those companies finally cracked and complied with PETA’s requests of minimum standards of animal welfare. The Safeway grocery store also succumbed to similar pressure.
A KFC spokeswoman announced that PETA is participating in “corporate terrorist activities” and that KFC, like the U.S. Government will not negotiate with terrorists. In my opinion, not only should they not negotiate with PETA, but they also shouldn’t tolerate their behavior. I would have every activist trying to get KFC to change their ways arrested, or at the very least escorted off of their property. There is no reason for KFC to put up with people on their property who are doing nothing but hurting their business. If they want to stand across the street and scream about animals rights, looking like a bunch of idiots, where there will be a minimal effect on KFC’s business, fine.
Congratulations to KFC for sticking to their guns. There will always be extremists trying to get mainstream society to change their ways, it doesn’t mean that we have to though.
